Custom rubber mouldings for satellite propulsion and positioning systems

Satellite propulsion and orbital positioning systems design and build represent the applications that we engage on space projects

TRP manufacture a range of technical custom rubber mouldings for the space industry. Extreme service conditions combined with essential criteria of zero defects and ultra-reliability for our space seals present the challenge that we overcome on each project we participate in.

Satellite propulsion systems comprise several elements where our technical rubber is specified, including fuel tanks, thrusters, and valve assemblies. TRP offer elastomer materials for producing fuel tank diaphragms suitable for both traditional hydrazine fuel and non-toxic green fuels, such as ADN (Ammonium Dinitramide Monopropellant).

Satellite positioning systems are necessary to maintain attitude and orientation while in orbit. Saving onboard fuel by reducing the use of traditional thrusters for movement, rotational placement can be achieved with deployment of reaction wheels. Micro vibrations can affect the system’s performance, hence the inclusion of anti-vibration mounts for satellite reaction wheel assemblies.

TRP’s space-proven applications and components:

• White EPDM specifically formulated for fuel tank bladders and rubber diaphragms, such as E334

• Custom-moulded, ultra-low-temperature FFKM valve seats, seals, gaskets and aerospace O-rings, created using TRPlast® LT-45

• Machined aluminium frame chemically bonded to high-damping butyl rubber antivibration mounts for reaction wheels, using D115.
